VEGETATION ON ROSELAND LAKE

Vegetation that appears to be growing wild in and around Roseland Lake includes the plants listed here. (Cultivated plants at Roseland Park are not included on this list) If you know of other species that are abundant at Roseland Lake, please contact the webmaster.

See Aquatic Plants at Roseland Lake (identified during 2012 survey). There may also be:

  • Carex spp., Sedge
  • Scirpus spp., Club-rush or Bulrush

The upland margin of the seasonally inundated area appears to have taller bushier vegetation that looks to be:

  • Solidago spp., Goldenrod
  • Impatiens spp.?
  • Asclepias incarnata, Swamp Milkweed (possible)

Other plants that are abundant at/around Roseland Lake include:

  • Caltha palustrus, Marsh Marigold
  • Decodeon verticillatus, Swamp Loosestrife (especially in the southwestern end - this is different than the very invasive Purple Loosestrife.)
  • Kalmia latifolia, Mountain Laurel
  • Lobelia cardinalis, Cardinal Flower
  • Pinus strobus, White Pine

Invasive plants on the shoreline include:

  • Iris pseudacorus, Yellow Iris/Yellow Flag/ Water Flag
  • Phragmites australis, Phragmites or Common Reed
  • Lythrum salicaria, Purple Loosestrife

Upland, Euonymus alatus Thunb. Burning Bush/Winged Euonymus is a real problem. Read more.

Plants noticed in Zeelandia include:

  • Apios americana, Ground Nut or Wild Bean
  • Betula papyrifera, White birch
  • Cephalanthus occidentalis, Buttonbush
  • Myosotis spp, Forget-me-not. Note that one species of Forget-me-not is invasive! Forget-me-not is growing in Muddy Brook. Some species of forget-me-not are invasive: Myosotis scorpoides or True forget-me-not/Water scorpion-grass is banned in CT. Read more about invasive plants at Roseland Lake.
  • Urtica doica, Stinging or Common Nettle
  • Viburnum dentatum, Southern Arrowood
  • Vitis vinifera, Wild Grape
